Upcoming Courses

NVC and Spirituality

2pm-5pm 23 and 24 March – 6 hours

How does Nonviolent Communication relate to spirituality?  Is NVC itself a spiritual practice?  How can a spiritual practice support your NVC practice?  Or the other way round?  On this course we will connect with each other to explore these questions.

Drawing on a diverse range of influences, including the work of Robert Gonzales, we will dive into the depths of our spiritual experience and start to look at it through an NVC lens.

This is an intermediate level course so is open to anyone who has completed a Foundation Course.  Participants are welcome from any spiritual tradition and none.

NVC Foundation through Woodbrooke

25 January to 29 February 2024

On this 6-week course we will connect with each other to learn and practise the skills of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) as developed by Marshall Rosenberg. NVC encourages us to empathise with our own and others’ deeper needs, to create spaces of love and compassion. Previous participants have gone on to use NVC in their work in education or health; in their local meetings; and in their own personal relationships.

At a time when we are needing to have difficult conversations with each other on pressing and complex topics, Nonviolent communication is a powerful tool for seeking to embody our Peace Testimony in how we are with each other, inside and outside of Quaker spaces.

“It has been a very lovely experience. I really appreciated group exercises as it allowed me to contribute and try out things in practice”

If you prefer learning face-to-face, this course will also run as a residential.

  • Empathy for others
  • Applications in the workplace

NVC Foundation through Woodbrooke

This course will introduce the basics of Nonviolent Communication (NVC). In NVC the emphasis is on deep listening, to ourselves as well as others, and through that we can discover the depth of our own compassion.

NVC as developed by Dr Marshall B Rosenberg, can be seen as both a spiritual practice that helps us see our common humanity and a concrete set of skills. On this course we will first focus on empathy for the self and from there learn to empathise with others and express ourselves from the heart. We will learn to clarify what we are observing, what we are feeling, what values we want to live by, and what we want to ask of ourselves and others, while using our power in a way that honours everyone’s needs. We will learn to move away from the language of blame, judgement or domination.

NVC creates a path for healing and reconciliation in its many applications, ranging from intimate relationships, work settings, health care, social services, police, prison staff and inmates, to governments, schools and social change organisations.

Empathic Communication in Organisations

On this course, based on Nonviolent Communication from Marshall Rosenberg, we will work together over four weeks to:

  • Deepen your emotional awareness
  • Learn to listen with empathy
  • Initiate dialogue to raise issues that are important to you
  • Become aware of power dynamics and how they play out in your communication

Students have noticed immediate improvements in their relationships as well as a deeper understanding of their own needs and motivations.

“I found it therapeutic and transformative, and have seen big changes in my work relationships over the course of the six weeks of doing this course. My life is at present eerily drama free!” Martin, 39, Cheshire, Mental Health Support Worker

Training will be in large and small groups to foster connection and trust as well as learning.

Nonviolent Communication Foundation

Learn the basics of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in this course over 6 Wednesday evenings.

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) enables you to connect deeply with your own heart which creates the capacity within to listen to others and to express yourself clearly and honestly.  Learning this process can improve your relationship with yourself and the people in your life, as well as contributing to a shift in society towards a more loving way of relating.

We will cover the 4 elements of

  • Observation – without judgement or evaluation

  • Feelings – in their purest form

  • Needs – the universal longings that make life complete

  • Requests – strategies to get needs met.

Training will be in a group of no more than 16 with many exercises done in pairs and threes to enable connection and safety.  Come with heart and mind prepared!

“Jenny is organised, curious, engaging, clear and asks great questions. The coaching sessions really helped to me get clarity on what i needed to do, where the inner and outer blockers were, and what the next steps were for me, aligned with my deeper values. I would recommend sessions with Jenny if you want to find your way through a current challenge or project and feel stuck.”
